About The Artwork
I have been woodturning for several years, in particular, enjoying making beautiful objects from less than perfect pieces of wood. Recently, I have been exploring producing images of our South African wildlife and landscape by woodburning. The Klipspringer is an antelope perfectly adapted to a rocky environment and this is a characteristic pose I captured in the Pilanesberg Wildlife Park. The rock formation behind, however, is in the Kruger Park. A goldleaf sun completes the composition, underlining Africa's climate. The wood used is Jacaranda, introduced from South America and popular as a street tree here. It is a beautiful straw colour and excellent for pyrography. The image is sealed with clear matt lacquer and finished with white furniture wax to maintain the original colour of the wood. A hole has been pierced in the back to hang the platter.

Born in Ipswich, England in 1947, I studied metallurgy at Sir John Cass College, London but have always maintained an interest in most froms of art. I emigrated to South Africa in 1979 and began woodturning in 1998. I have recently been concentrating on producing African wildlife and landscapes by pyrography on wood.
