Part of my “redux” series of works, which centred around the concept of reducing a cityscape to it’s most poignant shapes and forms, and highlighting the formal systems they are built on, this particular one is of Kowloon, the “Walled City”, actually demolished in the early 90’s because it was a victim of poor (or no) planning, and kept building in upon itself until it was impossible to see the sunlight from the ground because of the buildings being piled on top of one another. Interestingly, reducing it to a simpler state of being does not remove this sense of a cluttered existence, as there are still all sorts of odd shapes clashing with each other on the sheet of acetate I used. I was also considering the role of myself and my decision making process in this; as it was up to me to choose what shapes and forms to leave in or remove, leaving me in a strange role somewhere in between a renovator, architect, and town planner.

I am an artist currently studying for my Masters of fine art at Birmingham City University. My practice as an artist is primarily an investigation into grids, logic and mathematical systems, and by subverting them, how people will react and respond to them...myself included. I achieve this through the mediums of sculpture, video, installation, drawing and writing.
