Les fleurs ne parlent pas #1 Drawing

I made this series of 5 portraits following an artist residency in fields of Dahlias during the summer of 2020. I worked from the famous "code of the language of flowers" in the 19th century in which I found that the dahlia meant "Recognition". During the confinement in France in 2020, the inhabitants of the cities were all at the same time applauding the caregivers and other workers who could not stay at home to say "Thank you". So I used this Dahlia symbol to place it, like a mask, on the mouth and nose of my characters as if they wanted to say "Thank you" without being able to express it easily. These flowers placed on their mouths are imposing and bulky and hamper communication while allowing them to express their gratitude. It is a reflection on communication and the detours that one can take to try to say things without being able to clearly pronounce the words. Flowers don't speak ... but they say.
