About The Artwork

The fight between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling was more than just a boxing match. It was a clash of ideologies, a symbol of racial tensions, and a turning point in history. Louis was a black American who rose from poverty to become the world heavyweight champion and a hero for his people. Schmeling was a German who had once held the same title and was seen as a representative of Nazi Germany, even though he was not a member of the party. Their first encounter in 1936 ended with Schmeling knocking out Louis in the 12th round on Juneteenth. Two years later, they met again in a highly anticipated rematch at Yankee Stadium. This time, Louis unleashed a furious attack on Schmeling, knocking him down three times in the first round and ending the fight in just two minutes and four seconds. Louis became a national hero and an icon of freedom, while Schmeling became a victim of Nazi propaganda and persecution. But despite their differences and their roles in the political drama, the two men developed a mutual respect and friendship that lasted for decades. They exchanged letters, visited each other, and helped each other financially. They showed that sports can transcend politics and that enemies can become friends. I encountered much difficulty with this piece. Drawing colored pencils against black board was extremely challenging. Twice I walked away from the project, with no thought to return. Yet the potential to what the piece could be called me again, and I worked at it until it began to come alive. I opted to leave off and ending of 'fight 1' or 'fight 2' as a reminder that the two warriors split their series. The world continued into its division of ideologies and classism, but these two warriors earned one another's respect. If I have. succeeded, the viewer will feel they have entered the space and feel impact of the moment these fighters clashed

My name is Jeremy Phelps and I have been an artist practically since birth. Though all kids are natural artists, most of us put down the artistic tools and 'grow' out of it at a certain age. I never did. I have always appreciated the animation in cartoons and games, the way Disney makes magic happen on the big screen, and mostly the way fine artists make us feel with their two- and three-dimensional extensions of themselves. I've always known that this is my gift and my place in the world, to be an artist. I love to experiment with different mediums and subjects. I can create beautiful landscapes with colored pencils, vibrant portraits with pastels, and abstract compositions with acrylics. I enjoy the challenge of switching between different techniques and styles, and I feel like each medium has its own charm and personality. Sometimes I wonder if I should focus on one medium and master it, or if I should keep exploring and learning new things. Maybe I am afraid of missing out on something, or maybe I am just too curious and adventurous. The same dilemma applies to my subject interest. I like to draw animals, women, celebrities, historical narratives, plants, and anything that catches my eye. I don't want to limit myself to one theme or genre, but I also don't want to confuse my audience or lose my identity as an artist. How do you balance variety and consistency in art? That's a question that only time will tell for me.
