From an on-going series of drawings titled "Augury Series". All the drawings in this series deal with a semi consistent compositional format to represent and highlight a distinctive symbol, icon, bird, animal, or fragment of archeology in relationship to a specific adaptation of an atmospheric landscape. I have been intrigued with the multiple meanings surrounding cultural iconographies and the natural world for many years. This drawing "Messenger of War and Peace" is based the contradictory cultural readings. The Dove represents peace, purity, and renewal in Graeco-Roman iconography and yet in Japanese iconography a dove represents longevity and is sacred to the god of war and in Hindu it is the messenger of Yama god of the dead. The multiple reading of the iconography set up the two doves with the thorny branch between them. The drawing is on grey paper.
