About The Artwork

Mx. Liberty is a series that is part of a larger body of work focused on Nationality and Identity. A Black Woman is one of several pieces in the series as she has been the backbone of the country's founding and culture. This is an homage to the unsung heroesses who looked after the men and children while doing the heavy work themselves. "This country was built off slave labor. Slaves of African descent primarily and mostly. Without the "cheap labor" the United States would not have had the resources nor the equity to be the country it is today. When I think of America, 'What is it to be American?' or 'What is American Identity?' I think of Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus". The first 'American' symbol people see when they immigrate to the US. With an all-inclusive poem as the message on the Statue's base, I think of the statue of liberty as the personification and mascot of the United States. If this is the case, then why not have our mascot posterchild shown in many different incarnations of identities that make up this country. After all, it is a salad bowl, rather than a melting pot. Each culture, like an ingredient, is part of the larger dish but still retains its identity even when partially cooked. In a melting pot, everything melts and mingles until it is no longer itself." -Jordan T. Robinson-

Inspired by Maya Lin, and several other artists, it seems as though I am stuck between two sides; Urban and Rural, Art and Technology, Thought and Feeling, Body and Spirit, North and South. Yet, in this odd place where the two meet, there seems to be a sense of infinite possibility, and finding that "right" balance interests me. Originally I was born in New Rochelle, NY June 7th 1991. By the age of 2, my family and I moved to Greensboro, NC where I spent my childhood before moving to Charlotte and have traveled between ever since. I enrolled as a Visual Arts major with a concentration in Media Design at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University and graduated May, 2014. Before my graduation, I engaged in a thesis research and study that began my current artist statement. "It is not unusual that the world is imbalanced, but the perceived lack of effort to restore that balance is. Specifically, the imbalance made by human activity regarding nature. As the ongoing pursuit of finding that 'middle place' for both worlds to coexist, I begin my contribution to the conversation with a living sculpture. The body of work is the research and creative material used to construct three design concepts for one living sculpture and the logic behind the final design choices. This living sculpture is in conjunction with a professor who is researching methods of 'sustainable design' and living. In this research, my goal is to explore the 'flaws' of the human condition and address specifically those regarding our treatment towards the environment. Along with this exploration, I make my statements about the situation through design, architecture, and formal research essays." As my research continues, I also explore other concepts and philosophies relating to some aspect of human interaction, or related to the human condition. My work, overall, is an expression from my reaction to the content I encounter. The work diligently aims to reorganizing, restore, or resolve what is involved with "the order of things".
