There is a sense in which all of these artworks of mine, which attempt to express complex ideas in a minimalist way, are variations on a single line. A single line is an important element in all human thought and endeavour - from the drop of the weighted straight vertical line against the horizontal of the horizon we learn the perfect perpendicular and the right angle. The sum of these is the basis of architecture. That other great metaphorical motion of the stars and of human thought, the circle, is also a single line: in this case a perfect conjoined rotational line. Here I have attempted to bring a creative dynamic to the expression of the line by treating it to variation, thus giving it that other wonderful feature of human experience: uncertainty. This work has been executed in Indian Ink and acrylic paint on 300 gms acid-free card. I have taken especial pains to ensure the archival longevity of this work which I regard as important enough to preserve. Indian Ink has not been surpassed in this respect and examples of its use both in China and in Ancient Egypt testify to its unsurpassed archival properties. It is my expectation that this artwork will last for centuries or longer, given appropriate care.

United Kingdom
I was born in Liverpool and was educated at the University of Manchester, Swansea University and the Polytechnic of Wales where I studied History, Philosophy and Intellectual and Art History (MA). I have lived and worked in Ireland, Germany, Holland and the UK as a barman, labourer, soldier, Aircraft sealer, Trade Marks Examiner, Ministerial Policy Adviser in Trade & Industry (London), Head of International Relations at the Welsh Office and Principal Private Secretary to the Presiding Officer at the National Assembly for Wales. I left the Civil Service in 2005 and dedicated myself to art and writing. I post my abstract work on this page, which is a major strand of my artistic activity, where I am preoccupied with reducing my art and the nature of beauty to its essence - to simplicity and elegance. Such works are spontaneous, intuitive and completely original. The curve and competence of the lines in these abstract works is dependent on the smoothness and swiftness of their execution. I use a variety of inks, including indian ink and also acrylic paints for these and acid free paper to ensure these artworks will last for hundreds of years. These works are signed either Maguire (early works) or MJ Maguire. For my other work, as Mark John Maguire, please see my Saatchi page or a quick google search for that name will quickly identify my numerous internet presences! I have published a novel, The Night Traveller (MJ Maguire) in 2010 and I have published and recorded many poems which are widely available in numerous publications and online sources. I regularly publish articles in journals on a diverse number of subjects from International Affairs and Ethics to Metaphysics, the Theory of Knowledge and Modern Art.
