Two somewhat fashionable ladies out for a stroll. This drawing is part of a series of ink drawings inspired by images in National Geographic Magazines from the 50s and 60s. Emphasis is put on the immediacy of the line, never sketching before hand. This method creates some wonky results, stretched limbs and such. That's the magic, the essence.

Some scenarios may seem innocent enough, but upon closer inspection unmistakable sadness becomes apparent. Through drawing, painting and installation marie explores relationships between humor and the uncanny. She creates familiar yet disturbing scenes, sometimes involving violence, usually evoking pathos. Characters appear and reappear. Never learning lessons. Marie grew up in Michigan. She currently lives in Indiana with her husband david birkey.
