About The Artwork

Ramo di Faro - Branch of Iron. This drawing is an idea I have for a large outdoor sculpture cast in Iron. I love the conversation going on with one another of the branches. Graphite with its dense blackness is a great medium for me to depict iron As a sculptor I love to draw. Drawing can sometimes be like stone carving. I lay down a block of graphite then using a eraser like a chisel to carve away to reveal the form. The drawing is 5.5 x 8.5 in. (14 x 21.6 cm) on 130 lb. watercolor paper and offered unframed.

What ideas are mine and what are those of the overpowering influences of history's great artists? As a sculptor, removing all narrative and historical references, directs my pursuit of pure form. I started my sculpting career as a stone carver and I was most interested in volume, mass and the art of the curve. The narrative had much to do with Archaic themes and figurative references. Today, I explore the opposite side of the spectrum. Not only do I concentrate on minimal elemental forms but I have removed the narrative as well – or so it seems. It has occurred to me that even by removing the narrative it has been replaced by another of a mystical nature. Cryptography, geometric formulae, visual illusion, the unconscious and spirituality all come into play as an underlying theme that initially eluded even me. In addition I love to draw. I am offering many of my works on paper, some color paintings some black and white graphite works.
