Inspired by Port Talbot steelworks, the "Red Hot Machine" series celebrates a Welsh industrial landscape that is at once exploding with energy, but also mysterious and forbidden, only to be seen from afar. Machines are glimpsed and sketched from fleeting observations on train journeys and distant viewpoints, and allowed to evolve in a natural and improvisational process based as much in feeling as observation as they are produced on watercolour paper, using pen and ink and brush.

Both Illustrative and abstract in nature, Welsh artist James Iles' paintings explore the themes of growth, productivity and regeneration through their focus on industrial landscape and objects. They celebrate a striking mixture of technique, from aggressive abstract pieces to highly stylised, almost minimalist works, executed using flat, bold colour, strong silhouettes and clean lines. www.jamesilesart.com
