About The Artwork
This work takes its inspiration from the ninth hexagram of the I Ching, 'The Taming power of the Small'. The I Ching advises that if the right moment to take action on a large scale has not yet arrived, focus on small things. Firm determination within and gentleness and adaptability are more likely to bring progress. It reminded me of the Chaos theory butterfly effect, where the small movement of butterfly wings sends out ripples of change into the world. In a small way, I hope to bring an optimistic outlook to the world through my paintings.

Born in East London and trained at Chelsea School of Art, Joy has worked as a professional artist in many areas of art and design. Her abstracts take their inspiration from jazz and classical music, while museums, dreams and myth are often the starting point for her charcoal and pastel drawings. Joy has a permanent solo exhibition of her work at the new Watford School of Music, designed by the award winning architect, Tim Ronalds. A former lecturer in Life Drawing for several years, Joy is also an experienced art coach and mentor. Helping people with creative difficulties led her to create her 'Art for the Soul' workshops. In 2018, Joy's work was selected by the Museo D'Arte and the Gagliardi Gallery, London, to be exhibited at the Chianciano Biennale in Tuscany, in August. Her work was featured in the Saatchi magazine.
