About The Artwork

In 2022 I started a series of charcoal drawings. I wanted to focus on a clear and uncomplicated medium for a while. The objects created during this period were inspired by basic geometric shapes: Spheres, cylinders, circles, etc. They often show scratches or traces of age and wear (not real scratches, they are just illusory drawings). Such marks are important to me and there is a subtle, unobtrusive beauty in them, isn't there? Yet I try to maintain a balance between these disturbances and an inner calm and stillness of the final object. Even though they don't exist in reality, the objects somehow seem to be real. This tension makes these works interesting to me, because on this basis a dialogue can develop between the viewer and the image. All my drawings are fixed with a very high quality fixative, which will not yellow. Nevertheless, the picture must be framed by the buyer (preferably behind glass). How is the drawing packaged? Because I value each of my drawings, I try to package them in a way that ensures they arrive undamaged. The drawing is sent between two archival papers and in bubble wrap in a sturdy tube.

Richard Nestler, born in Germany lives and works in Prague Czech Republic. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2012. Embedded in my exploration of portraying illusionary objects that conceal their true essence, purpose, time, and age, I've long delved into this concept within my art. This pursuit stems from an awareness of our interaction with devices – smartphones, computers, apps, and artificial intelligence – where we navigate surfaces without comprehending their underlying functions or programming language. In 2022, I initiated a new series of charcoal drawings, delving into the interplay of perspective and size, crafting illusory landscapes that transcend both inside and upon surfaces, leaving the viewer uncertain about dimensions. The drawings feature scratches and deep marks akin to scars. These imperfections not only contribute to the illusionary quality but also serve as subtle cues to the object's history of use and age. While some of the drawings provide a space for contemplation and daydreaming, drawing the viewer into a secluded universe untouched by our world, others remain sealed, offering the viewer no tangible anchor. The illusory structure within the drawing, coupled with the fine grain of cotton paper and the texture of natural charcoal on the surface, plays a pivotal role. In an era dominated by digital images, existing solely in digital form, stored on virtual hard drives, preserving genuine texture gains significance.
