Shopfront 'Tales for Sale' - Limited Edition 2 of 100 Drawing

This print is from the original graphite pencil drawing of a boy looking in the shop window of a book store, Tales for Sale. It's taken from my illustrated story, The Story Thief, unpublished as yet. The shop was based on a toy shop in a street in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire. It had real character, so I used it for this illustration of a bookstore shopfront. I wanted some chiaroscuro contrasts going on between lamps and night-time, so researched Victorian lampshades. I love the decorative style of the Victorian era. I wanted a decorative lampshade in the window shining down on an open book. It was hard to gain the exact reference I needed for how the street light would behave on the building and street, so much of this had to be imagined. I love the contrast you can achieve with graphite pencil. This piece was created using 2B, 3B and 4B pencils. I used 2B to draw it with so the edges are clear to see, and 3B and 4B for shading, in order to achieve the stronger contrasts that I love. To show the print off to its full potential, I recommend having the print mounted on a white or pale complementary coloured mount board and a tasteful frame. Mounting artwork gives it ‘breathing space’ so the frame doesn’t sit too close to the print. Your local frame shop will be able to help you choose and advise you on coloured mounts and frames. Avoid direct sunlight and UV light as it can be very damaging.
