Drawing, Silverpoint on Paper
Size: 3.5 W x 5.5 H x 0.1 D in
Walking through Berkeley Square in London one day, I noticed some wonderful chert stones on the path, with interesting veins running through them. This small drawing was inspired by one of the small, dense English stones. The geological pedigree of humble stones underfoot are always interesting, and their origins there to be understood in many ways. Each stone speaks of great age, of times when we humans were probably not even present on the earth, and the "hieroglyphs" that one can read in these stones seem, to me, to be reminders of times of huge changes and tumults... that put our world into perspective. Metalpoint, (gold and silver in this case), is drawn with metals that are part of the natural world, like the stone I was drawing. The angularity and hard brilliance of the chert evoked the image I draw.
