If there is one model I hope to draw again someday, it is the dancer, Soa. This was from the first of two sessions we had with her. Her petite yet incredibly strong physique coupled with striking facial features and some of the best and varied poses I have seen, made for an extremely productive session. Here, Soa is knelt down with an arched back, one hand supporting herself by the ankle. The pose has a great line of action that runs through from the feet, right through the curved spine to the head, and super clear silhouette that reads instantly. This drawing is from the first session where I started to experiment with gouache. A new medium coupled with a fantastic model made these two hours a delight. This, being a five minute pose, I used one thick brush on white paper, and though it was quick, I made sure to incorporate the shadows using a dry brush effect and this pose offered the perfect opportunity in getting the cast shadow under that back and on the tops of the glutes. Even in a five minute pose I find it extremely important to include some indication of facial features and with her shaved head, Soa made it easy to not get lost in details and it keeps the silhouette clean and easily read. It was done at the Wednesday evening Life Drawing sessions held at Illumination Mac Guff, Paris, where I worked as a Character Animator for over three and a half years. The studio is known for such films as Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and The Lorax. All of my figure drawings are from life - no photos were used at any point in their fabrication. The model is in front of you and you have a definite amount of time to get down as much information as you can or see fit. Because of this, each drawing is truly unique and a complete one of a kind, containing a spontaneity that can never be duplicated through photo inspired drawings/paintings. Please continue to look through my work for more images of Soa, quick and long poses.

English/French Character Animator that has worked on animated feature films, 'Nimona', 'Missing Link', 'The Secret Life of Pets', 'Minions', and many more over the last 16 years. Figure/Life Drawing is my passion and as well as being something I take great pleasure in doing, also has a very beneficial impact on my professional work in terms of anatomy, weight, movement and posing. When drawing the human figure I love using shadow to create volume and depth, I love trying to capture the weight and movement in an anatomically correct and yet loose manner, and above all, I love finding little attentions to detail that capture the essence of the model, especially around the face. I have lived across 3 different European countries and the US, and am now living in London, UK.
