About The Artwork

I have been playing with symmetries for several years, mostly using a layering process with pencil and pen line and found patterns. This symmetry reverts to an earlier brushwork style which went away when I ran out of the brushes I liked to use, which are no longer made. Creating it I was reminded of Freud's inkblots but looking again I am reminded of Raphael's grotteschi murals, which were inspired by the newly rediscovered murals in the Domus Aurea in Rome. These, though fantastic, were more figurative; mine emerge in almost recognizable shapes and figures but by accident in a style I call "bagatelle". Most of my bagatelles have very distinct edges but some have dry brush wispiness to them. The latter wispier brush drawings are what I've used here. They feel both cosmic (imagine if distant nebulae had symmetries) and minuscule or microscopic (as if they were photographs of minute organisms; minute organisms have symmetries.) But this kind of talk diminishes the effect, which should be individual and private and undirected, so ignore everything I've said.
