A painting in pen and ink with highlights of pastel on butter coloured paper (pale yellow). The prima ballerina is Maria Kochetkova dancing Medina in Le Corsaire in the London Coliseum as part of the Russian Icons Gala. I was fortunate to be invited to the dress rehearsal and she was a dream to behold. She sparkled across the stage full of energy and passion. I wanted to capture her joy of dance in her frothy white tutu. The inky background focuses on her moment.

Zoe James-Williams is a distinguished Welsh artist based along the stunning Gower coast, celebrated for her evocative ballet and figurative paintings. Her work has been exhibited across the UK and Channel Islands, gaining recognition for its depth and grace. Zoe holds the honour of being the first-ever Artist in Residence at Swansea Grand Theatre, a role that deepened her connection to the performing arts and shaped much of her creative journey.** In addition to her artistic practice, Zoe is passionate about teaching. She leads drawing and watercolour classes both in-person along the Gower coast and online, sharing her expertise with aspiring artists. As an Official Ambassador for Derwent Art, Zoe has an collaborated closely with principal ballet dancers from some of the world’s most renowned companies, including The Royal Ballet, The Mariinsky, The Bolshoi, and The English National Ballet. She has had the privilege of being invited to capture the performances of icons like Alina Cojocaru, Johan Kobborg, and Xander Parish, whose portrayal of Romeo in *Romeo and Juliet* left a lasting impression on her artistic vision. Zoe's process is deeply personal, drawing inspiration directly from her encounters with the performers she portrays, rather than relying on third-party imagery. Her work is held in prestigious collections around the world, including those of Alina Cojocaru, Johan Kobborg, the Welsh National Opera, and Swansea Grand Theatre. Notable collectors also include Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones and Chas Hodges of Chas & Dave. In her groundbreaking role as the first Artist in Residence at Swansea Grand Theatre in 2009, Zoe was granted rare access to both the on-stage performances and the behind-the-scenes workings of the theatre. This experience allowed her to capture the contrast between the magic of the spotlight and the quiet dedication of those working behind it, creating a body of work that reflects the hidden beauty of the theatre world.
