About The Artwork

This piece depicts the struggles of a child in a day and age where war is becoming more prominent. Dedicated to children in countries afflicted with major insurgencies, it portrays how children in those areas of the world are in mental turmoil because of their surrounding circumstances. It shows how these children are in conflict with what path in life they wish to and/or are forced to take- choose violence or peace. While they may desire harmony, so often, in such situations, they are required to lose their innocence and ‘grow up’ accepting brutality as a part of life; they accept it in order to survive. The flower serves as a symbol for peace while the firearm embodies the idea of violence and conflict. The medium, charcoal, was chosen for a more natural and soft feel to this dark theme. I chose to create it in a hyper-realistic style to bring out the reality of the situation. The black and white tones intensify the suffering of the child and the overall melancholy.

Art, in my opinion, is a source of escape from certain elements in life that can cause intense distress. A visual medium such as fine art allows you to explore your inner thought process, your emotions or your very individuality. In the end, the individual understands himself better finding a means to creatively express himself/herself. It is with these ideas in mind that I go about creating art. Works that I create are a visualization of themes considered polar opposites and yet that always manage to intertwine with one another. Themes that are passionate to me are those of purity and impurity, mortality and so on. Fusing different elements that seem to have no connection and conceptualizing a painting that can form this connection never stop to fascinate me. My background in Psychology coupled with events that deeply impact us today become sources that inspire such conceptualizations. Strategically employing vibrant and dull hues, contrast of colours and focused lighting are component that help me bring out that psychological impact; a signature characteristic of my style. Right from childhood, I have always had an intellectual curiosity and a desire to know more. However during that period of time, I also discovered my adoration for drawing and painting; for art. I felt a conflict of interest that caused my admiration for opposite ends of a spectrum. At this point in life, I have managed to find a balance between the two and find artistic ways of expressing them. This is what I believe has led me to discovering my 'artistic personality'.
