About The Artwork

Every garment in the world - that has a seam - has been touched by a human hand . Throughout the pandemic, isolation, quarantine, sickness and death have made us acutely aware of touches gone missing. But long before March 2020 -- automation, digitization, mediation and the virtual platforms we voluntarily inhabit –- had already fundamentally changed the way we use our own hands, and the way we experience what is manmade and what is handmade in so many arenas of daily life. The human hand, however, remains still, everywhere, essential to joining two pieces of cloth together for a garment. We may not think about the assembly, or consciously feel the hands behind this making, when putting clothing across skin, but the 200,000 year-old human challenge of connecting fabrics with a seam, is still solved to some degree, by the guiding hand of a human hand. This drawing series began with an effort to make a choreographic score about touch, using studies of hands in motion. Over several months, artisans from different studios and companies in the Garment District, shared aspects of their process with me through interviews, photos, video clips and meetings -- letting me document their hands at work. These artisans spoke, reflected, punched, pressed, folded, bent, slid, thread, cut, stitched, twisted, pulled, plied and pleated. The drawings respond to their actions, and to the reach of these small touches as they extend into larger scales of human movement and activity across the globe. The pieces also reference seminal works in dance, poetry and visual art centering on the hand including – Hand Movie (1966) by Yvonne Rainier, Hand Catching Lead (1968) by Richard Serra, Loops (1971) by Merce Cunningham, and Touch (1986) by Octavio Paz, among others. This project is supported, in part, by the Garment District Alliance and by New York City’s City Artists Corps Grants #CityArtistCorps.
