About The Artwork

It's not technically a drawing, it's kind of experimental technique that I call "batique on paper". I claim that no other artist beside me have ever used this technique for icons, it's kind of my invention. During my graphic experiments with different kinds of glue and inks I've found out that this technique gives a very interesting "antique" effect. What's aslo fascinating about batique on paper is that you never know if the work is successful until the last moment, when you have all black piece of paper and you begin to wash it with water and sponge. So the final result is either a big succes or a big failure. This work "THE MOTHER AND THE CHILD" is inspired by very famous Russian icon The Virgin of Vladimir. I like this icon because of tenderness that we can feel between mother and child. We definitely see the sorrow in the eyes of Mary but there's also an acceptance and willingness to have her child close and safe in her arms. The original icon has lots of symbolic meanings but for me personally it's a symbol of motherhood and unconditional love to the child and relying on God, believing that He knows what's right for us. The work comes in a box, signed on the back and with the certificate of authenticity.
