ABOUT THE ARTWORK

According to the myth, wanting to make her son Achilles immortal, Thetis dipped Achilles into a river called Styx (one of the five rivers that went through the Underworld/Hades). Thetis held the baby Achilles by his ankle and dipped his entire body into the river. The body places that river touched became invulnerable, except his ankles. The painting captures a moment of contemplation for Thetis. She stands at the edge of the river, weighing the consequences of her actions and the fate of her son. This scene is a depiction of a mother’s love and the lengths she will go to protect her child, even when faced with the inevitability of fate. Thetis’s contemplation at the banks of the Styx is a poignant reminder of the human struggle against destiny and the desire to shield loved ones from harm. As a sea nymph and mother of Achilles, Thetis represents maternal love and protection. Her presence at the riverbank signifies her deep concern for her son’s future. In Greek mythology, the River Styx is a boundary between Earth and the Underworld. It symbolizes the transition between life and death, and in this context, it represents the fine line between mortality and immortality.
