The totem series explores totemism and shamanism. I am interested in how we connect with nature and how being in nature is healing and liberating on a soul level. This series takes it a step further, connecting with the symbolism of animals and nature. Swans in Native American culture have a meaning of seeing the beauty within and without.. here I connect with the Swan to enable me to see this beauty in me and all around me. The nakedness symbolises my vulnerabilty. The water lily is a symbol of connection to the grounding and healing of the earth... here I connect with this attribute. They are balanced on my head as a totem pole, embewing their magic.

Abbi Torrance is interested in the human condition, simple full length portraits explore our relationships with nature and animals. Isolated figures, with a direct gaze, dreamlike, quirky, unusual, describe her work well. She is currently exploring totemism and myth. Her previous drawings explore issues of free will and control. In these drawings Torrance uses performance to highlight how people connect to each other, the systems around us and space. Graph paper backgrounds make a statement about how human beings are increasingly seen as data, markets and demographics. Does the individual still have agency? Torrance has been exhibited widely. Including the Royal Academy Summer exhibition, the ICA, Discerning Eye and a solo show in Galerie Nivit-Curzone, Paris in 2015.
