Under the Icons of Whiteness (The Status Quo 1) Drawing

Bringing together the central, yet slickly invisible, icons of White Power (in this case, the 'White House' itself, a shiny beacon of supremacist ideology, and certainly partially built by enslaved African-American human beings)and the colourful, organic favelas, this juxtapositioning invites questions about the status quo and what is accepted, even taken for granted in our globalised culture. This piece was created during global lockdowns, and travel bans, so I drew on my past travels, in the Americas (Brasil and USA in this case). Inks and markers on paper as I love their simplicity and directness, despite having once learned complex traditional printmaking techniques.
