Ships in a Tube
Self-portrait on paper, drawn in pen and pastel. The drawing is inspired by my personal identity and the way in which others sexually see me. The work also takes inspiration from the porn culture and circulating ideas that aim to influence how we should present ourselves to others. The mechanical element to the work responds to pressures to conform and the idea of there being no choice.

My artistic practice explores themes of sexuality, identity, childhood memories, family life and wider sociological views on society. I use the sex doll as a metaphor regarding how I see western society. The sexualisation of western identity is inspired by the ideas that circulate from both consumerist and porn consumption behaviours. It is to my belief that our identity, as well as sexual behaviour, is wrapped up in the anxieties that each person individually faces. This play on identity from an individual, internet, consumerist and porn consumption perspective outlines the spectrum of aesthetics that my practice plays with. Furthermore, my artistic practice explores art movements from both an artistic and sociological perspective. I believe the artistic movements born from their own periods of oppression can serve as symbols for the contemporary ideas that artists can insert into their works, as a means to describe the current sociological situation they face. The wider context of my practice works towards ideas of image interpretation, questioning the approaches artists use when describing the experience of the other. I am working towards an artistic style that allows the viewer to take on a multisensory understanding. Until then, I am working towards an artistic practice that includes a study of visual culture, as a means to push the arts into the next wave of consciousness.
