About The Artwork

Wall sculptures http://www.ccandratx.com/en/p281/press_13/paola-ricci-wall-sculpture.html Photos Enrique Vidal When I arrived at the CCA in Andratx, the building appeared to me like a fortress surrounded by air hills with the ground giving the trees strength. The four studios for the artists are placed side by side and are contained by high walls; they are so “ huge” in their width, length, height and depth that they appear as architectural sculptures. Inside this place the echo and the silence are a unique thing, where balance is as fantastic as it is complex; daily life weighs itself inside this space and the emptiness speaks in the echo and I entered into it and bent to it. The illumination in the space during the day changes very quickly running along the walls, whereas during the night the artificial light is so strong that only the softness and lightness of the lamp on the ground surrounds me. I feel that all this studio space is untouchable. Whereas the space outside appears as a blend of hills shapes, clouds and trees. The work starts on the walls and is carried out directly on the wall; the wall prevaricates the empty space of the studio, it is impossible not to look at the wall. During the first few days the solitude of the space was physical and mental and then it became part of me. So the absence cannot be read but felt; I have worked on the necessity that an idea doesn’t exist unless realized, so upside down the idea of conceptual art makes necessary and essential art. So my creation is a series of wall sculptures; in the significance of the curved line for example, not in the realisation of the work made up of single pieces of wood joined to each other by invisible wires and glue, but in its being put in touch with the wall that manifests the essence of the art work. It is the lightness respecting the wall when it touches it or the distance of the line from the wall, the suspended line created by the elements inserted in the wall, and the shadow appearing on the wall. The curved line of wood is a narrative on the wall of strength inside fragility. So the space is generated by continuity ? Or continuity as the only possibility to generate the space ? In these art works the drawing and the sculpture appear alternately in symbiosis on inseparable borderlines, we don’t see them as sculptures or as drawings, because they are a unique shape and essence. Plotinus “ the eye could not see the sun if it were not in some way, a sun “ It is remaining in this shape, the shape of a circle in a drawing, a kind of game played between full-empty, curved-straight tension that is created by this narration. Looking is not the same as seeing, as Lacan pointed out: “when the subject is seeing, he is not looking, and when is looking, he does not see” Psychoanalytic theory holds that our vision of the body of others is always fragmentary. The air, therefore, is another element present in these art works that are moved by the floating air, our body moves through the air and occupies the emptiness we enter and that emptiness is invisible existence. In the universal immaginary world of the erotic there is nothing more seductive than air. The drawing is seen as matter of impulsive progressing through pulses or beats, in search of the other with invasive intent. These installed sculptures, and drawings created by me develop through waves, and echoes. © Paola Ricci 2011

The writings on space and architecture are analyzed through the forms in its design and in its history, and connecting them to the man living in them. http://www.paolaricci.com/blog_3a/category/architettura-design/ She have developed an innovative methodology in studies and Arts in education which compare modern contemporary literature with poetry and prose and art. In the Artist’s Statement she developed different kinds to approach the view. The Artist-Aesthetics Archaeologist excavates in an area of knowledge, the subject of discussion, the thought used to prepare a surface for a project. These present research topics are applied at Art in Education, Architecture Special Projects, Graphic Design, Publishable Writing, Art, Sculpture Installation.
