About The Artwork

I appreciate the beauty in the shapes formed by the flattened, recycled cardboard boxes. Unfolding that earthy brown, three-dimensional material into two dimensions reminds me of sewing, only in reverse. My mom taught me to sew when I was in elementary school. In sewing, a pattern is used over fabric, which is then cut and stitched, tucked, or folded to create a garment – a transformation from two dimensions to three. In my recent work, I use flattened, recycled boxes as patterns, creating compositions of overlapping shapes with gaps between them forming lines. I then strive for asymmetrically balanced compositions by the placement of elements and color. This drawing is based on Redwork. "Redwork is a form of American embroidery, also called art needlework, that developed in the 19th century and was particularly popular between 1855 and 1925. It traditionally uses red thread, chosen because red dyes were the first commercially available colorfast dyes, in the form of Turkey red embroidery floss. Redwork designs are composed of simple stitches and were mainly used to decorate household objects in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially quilts." –Wikipedia

Born in Nebraska, USA Lives and works in Michigan, USA Maureen Nollette's paintings and drawings employ the formal elements of art to explore the delicate balance and connections formed through relationships in a broad sense. She investigates this topic using ordinary objects such as flattened, recycled boxes as patterns, layering arrangements with a network of lines and shapes. Nollette creates asymmetrically balanced compositions through the placement, scale, and color of elements, resulting in work that resembles quilts, circuitry, or maps. Nollette's work has been in exhibitions across the United States and China. Additionally, her work is part of prominent private and public collections, including the Detroit Institute of the Arts (Detroit, MI); Yves St. Laurent (New York, NY); MGM Mirage Hotel (Las Vegas, NV); J. Jill Group (Tilton, NH); and Gerald R. Ford International Airport (Grand Rapids, MI). She was awarded a 2025 Carraig-na-gCat Artists Residency in West Cork, Ireland; a 2022 Thread Artists Residency in Sinthian, Africa; and a 2016 Marble House Project Artists Residency in Dorset, VT. Nollette holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Nebraska, a BFA from the Kansas City Arts Institute, and an MFA in Studio Arts from Queens College.
