Wild Syringa, Magaliesberg Drawing

Wild Syringa, Burkea Africana, can be found on the Quartzite ridges of the South African Bushveld. Exposed to the fierce sun and prevailing winds these trees exhibit the scars of long drughts and sudden, intense thunderstorms. This group grow on my property overlooking the valley (die Moot in Afrikaans) with the Magaliesberg to the north. In this composition, I have closed the valley to show the trees against the mountains rather than a more distant line. The gilded sun suggesting the extreme climate that produced this landscape. I used a pen with an electrically heated wire nib to create this image. Temperature and nib design produces different shading and textures of the landscape elements. The wood is Jacaranda which has a beautiful straw colour, complimenting the sepia tone of scorched wood. It is an excellent timber for turning. A platter provides its own frame but I often like to see my compositions escape this boundary. The image has been sprayed with a clear matt lacquer and finished with a high quality white furniture wax. There is a wire hanger attached to the rear.
