About The Artwork

'Word Have Wings' is an imagined expression of the lost innocence deeply rooted in my culture of silence and misrepresentation. It is part of a journey probing my identity through art. As an immigrant in a culture that is diametrically opposite to my birth, I was able to imbibe different strands of free expression that ultimately formed the bedrock of all my artistic efforts. Bangladesh, the country I was born into and spent formative years of my life, was born only six years before my birth. It emerged through a violent struggle against successive periods of colonial oppression. Even after realising a dream of living as Bangladeshi, we failed to reap the benefit of our newly found independence. Geopolitical intrigues set the foundation for an extended period of military rules and the feeble experimentation of democracy with pervasive socio-political intolerance that stifled the creativity of many. As we tried to cope with the infant democracy, we are also reeling from the shock of an identity crisis.

I am a Bangladeshi-born British interdisciplinary visual artist living and working in Canada. I organised many solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in different countries. My work is autobiographical in nature. I use the unique signature of my body to explore my identity in time and place. I use my hair as a thread and my fingertips as brushes during this process. I imprint my emotions on different surfaces to express the inimitable chaos of my inner and outer worlds.
