Embrace Drawing

As a published poet and author I often explore love and intimacy but words can only take us so far and a picture really does tell a thousand words. Images linger and colours resonate in a way words can never wholly portray. With ‘Embrace’ I wanted to capture the intimacy of touch. The heat of the moment and the surrender of lovers as they give themselves over to our primal need for the ultimate connection. By using a predominantly monochromatic colour palette the spare use of colour becomes more accentuated whilst the use of white Sennelier pastels intense white and golden ochre add both intensity and contrast to lift the lovers from the canvas. With ink as a base the pigments in Sennelier pastels refract the light so that the colour values change as the light in a room shifts with the womans arm seeming to float outside the canvas. By working on canvas instead of paper the medium lends greater substance to the picture which is finished with Latour soft pastels fixative to protect against smudges and a light spray coat of Sennelier Anti-UV Varnish to ensure colour fastness.
