Ink, Fineliner and Marker on 300gsm watercolour paper This piece is based on photographs taken by Natalie Alexander on the streets of Osaka, Japan. This process begins with photography, from there the selected photograph is then sketched in pencil onto paper, to get the basic layout and perspective, before moving onto the final lineart of the buildings, in fineliner. This is then taken digital to test colour and tone. Next, often several versions of the single line portrait are created, this is done for two reasons, to get familiar with the shape, and curves, of the face to make the process of adding the single line portrait to the final piece more fluid, and simply to give multiple versions to choose from. This portrait is also taken digital in order to test it over the piece, for scale and placement. Then it is back to paper, the buildings are then painted using ink, this occurs in three separate layers, the portrait is then added to the piece, and finally a bold stroke of colour in ink.

United Kingdom
London born, and based, artist Natalie Alexander creates pieces in response to the architecture, moods, and people that she encounters. Her process starts in photography, and from there sees her creating landscape, and single line portrait, separately, before bringing both together to create a final piece that juxtaposes precise lines, and delicately painted buildings, with heavy marker, and bold strokes of ink. This duality is key. Natalie's passion for street photography, and interest in human nature, are strong influences in her current work, and continue to be evident in upcoming projects, both illustrative and photographic.
