About The Artwork

The French expression of « nombrilisme » can be explained as egocentrism and a narcissistic attitude, beside the adjective centrifuge refers to a movement from the centre to the outside. The title of the installation “Nombrilisme centrifuge” express a double movement from inside to outside, and from outside to inside; this movement illustrates the human attitude towards the world. Currently we assist to a permeability of the geographical borders, which allows us to move and live far away from our original country, we can communicate in every moment all around the world and we can receive information from each corner of the planet; this centrifugal movement is associated to a centripetal movement, which brings us to recollect our origins, our identity, our history. The individual analyze his navel to find himself, as a lifeline against the fear of losing himself in the infinite possibilities in the present world. The navel is the first scar of the body, place of the detachment from the liquid universe of the maternal womb, memory of the first link, necessary separation to be able to go to the world. The navel is an amputation which feels sometimes as phantom pain, whishing the reconnection.

Born in Alghero, Italy. I live between Lausanne (Switzerland) and Alghero (Italy) My artistic research is focused on the skin, as body and physical border, a filter, a permeable surface on which we carve our personal history. The body creates marks and, at the same time, it accumulates them on its surface in the form of wrinkles, scars, tattoos and the natural aging process. This research is a reflection on the body as object/subject and foundation of identity. By operating a close up on some parts of the body, lines and pores become visible; skin surface shows a multitude of lines and suggests the multiple movements of the body. The subject is realized through paper perforation, which becomes the matrix to reproduce it by the "spolvero" technique; the charcoal fallen through the perforations represents the mark left by the body passage. The mark is the dust, ephemeral and eternal part of the universe. The act of perforation ritually confirms the existing connection between inner and outer worlds: skin pores represent the opening of the body on the outside world, the chance of leaving a mark behind.
