This drawing was inspired by an October walk along the South West Coast Path in Cornwall. As I walked along Portheras Cove there was a storm rolling in off the Atlantic and the sky was full of boiling clouds that mimicked the huge waves. It seemed as the sea and sky had come together to form a vast vertical wall of cloud and water. The effect was almost overwhelming. In the faltering light the colours were subdued and when I came to create this piece in the studio charcoal was the only choice of medium to evoke the visual and physical sensation of being there. I hope that viewers will get something of this feeling from the drawing. A lot of of my work is directly informed and inspired by my connection with the landscape and particularly by the sea. I live close to the sea and feel a deep bond with the restless intensity and beauty of the water, sky and land.

United Kingdom
I am an abstract painter based in Portsmouth, UK. I was born in Yorkshire and have lived in many parts of this country and also in Santiago de Chile. I originally studied 3D design and was in design practice for many years. In 1994 I went back to university and took a degree in Visual Studies and have been working at being an artist since graduating. I love all things monochrome, photography, Film Noir, and especially charcoal drawings. Consequently a large amount of my current output is charcoal drawings on paper. My work is mostly abstract landscape inspired by years of serious hiking and cycling. I also listen to a lot of Jazz when I'm in the studio and so have an ongoing series of drawings based on this music. I am also a songwriter/guitar player with Film Noir inspired band Murderville.
