100 Years of War Installation

Conceived and made for the Tone Festival, Chatham 2014 the final work was an installation that included film and projected photographs with text and environmental sounds. This work was shown in the POP space in Chatham High Street. In the year of the 100th anniversary of the end of the “war to end all wars” this piece was an interrogation of war memorials. In those 100 years over 340 armed conflicts have been recorded around the world. The work also aimed to bring attention to the lives of non-combatants whose deaths are unmarked and unrecorded by any state, but which NGOs suggest far outstrip the numbers of military dead. Through subverting the traditional image of the poppy through making visual associations with the forgotten and the neglected corners of the man-made world it is hoped that that impact of this piece will be to raise and build questions in the audience about the value of state sponsored “Remembrance”.
