About The Artwork

A wooden cross with Ave Mary, a faceless, naked Mary, who is crucified by misogynistic Christian thought. The installation is a personal contribution to the subject of domestic violence. It's part of "Millennium" that consists of four works, mounted on one-hundred-year-old wooden boards. The face of a vestal, Rhea Silva, as if to symbolically recall the sacrifice devoted to female purity and the terrible punishment of those vestals who did not maintain the rigor of the task assigned to them. The two faces of the girls, Nicolina and Noemi, transformed into ancient Roman statues covered with fabric and ribbons, soaked in bloody cement. An old wooden window, with the clinical diary of one of the 30,000 women who were interned in psychiatric hospitals during fascism because they did not correspond to the regime’s image of the perfect mother. Impertinent, pleasant, extravagant, erotic, impulsive, nymphomaniacal, flirtatious, irritable, talkative ... Millennium is accompanied by the video that relates, in rap time, how Roman Law and Christianity have influenced the creation of our Western female cultural models. The installation is dedicated to Nicolina Pacini and Noemi Durini. video : https://www.lizfrancia.com/mixed-media

My painting is research into color that becomes matter, dream and meditation. It is a chromatic effervescence of layered emotions where wounds have dissolved into vitality. Ever since I was a child I have always loved to paint, but only recently have I begun to express this passion publicly. In my painting, I create fundamentally abstract images and landscapes which are characterized by very strong chromatic hues and shades. My work with moving images—video—is undoubtedly an influence. For the past two decades I have been creating various social and artistic documentaries where my research has always been aligned with a social and personal commitment to relate the weakest and most painful of human conditions on the planet. I realize documentaries in Latin America, Africa, India, Ethiopia, Japan, Saudi Arabia as well as in Italy for various Italian and foreign TV channels. In some of my paintings I take up the themes that I have confronted in my work on documentaries. I love mixing various artistic forms: photography, video, painting. www.lizfrancia.com
