Created in Taiwan, in cooperation with the Taiwanese, ‘花的孩子 (Flower Child) - The Qiaotou Portrait Project’ is a tribute to their political student movements for democracy and independence, realized through the Wild Lily Movement, the Wild Strawberry Movement, and the Sunflower Movement. This process was motivated by harnessing a requisite community project with Xing-Tan Elementary school, during residency at Kio-A-Thau Sugar Refinery Artist Village at the Taiwan Sugar Museum this past October and November. The children were taught a lesson about the history of the three flower movements, their relevance to Taiwanese history, and the intersection of art and activism in their local community and abroad. This lesson was designed in partnership with the local administration and student activists, who translated during the class. Through writing, acting, and drawing their reactions to this lesson, parameters of the formal qualities of the imagery in the work were set. The painted patterned silhouettes are of the students of Xing-Tan Elementary school, who created the poses by acting out their interpretations of both the flowers and their historical connotations. The majority of the prose was written by the children or painted on by local activists later in the studio, and the pattern of flowers were decided by the students tracing stencils of the flowers however they liked. This work is comprised of 9 water based paintings stretched to fit into the window frames of an abandoned house. which is adjacent to the Xing-Tan Elementary school and a graveyard in the Qiaotou Sugar District of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
