About The Artwork

In my work, 'Grotta' refers to the human psychological cave, where there are the subtle emotions of humans which can not be completely understood, not literally referring to the cave. The small creatures in this work represent images of human beings struggling to live similarly and differently. They are replicated in large quantities, but their appearances are somewhat different. Urethane foam, which is the main material of these creatures, is put into the same silicon frame, but different irregular shapes are produced depending on the expansion ratio. About 7,000 creatures are made in around 100 silicone molds, but their shapes are all different. I used these materials because I thought that untypical shapes that are not created as intended are suitable for expressing human beings who live different lives. I have noticed that human beings gather together to live a fierce life, but form a huge group of 'society', and I have tried to combine these microbes to make them look like gigantic creatures. Creatures attached to each other are neither beautiful nor sensuous, and their shapes can not be precisely defined. But I hope that the audience will appreciate the grotesque and incomprehensible scenes, develop the complex emotions that are felt in the horror, and be able to feel a little sympathy by feeling that humans are small beings and can not but live together. My art work is based on the grotesque aesthetics, which considers the world as chaotic and ambiguous, and in which the limitations of imagination are always beyond imagination. Above all, I want to metaphorize the complex and confusing modern society by specifying the appearance of the grotesque shapes appearing in the works as psychological caves (grotta) mixed with human anxiety and anger. Of course, in this metaphor, the consciousness of the fundamental alienation of modern man is revealed in front of the image. I pursue the arts which can show us the reason we live although we exist in the world for no reason. As the boundaries between ugly and beautiful, moral principles and which are not, are becoming blurred, the world that humans have believed as absolute begins to collapse. Has there been a single moment that was not cruel ever since the human beings were thrown into this world? The eyes that look at the world just honestly, the eyes that face the grotesque, and the recognition of the existence of this unusual world, these are artistic attitudes with which I can perform as an artist in this cruel world.
