About The Artwork

This work is a visual narrative of Indonesian Buginese mythology, sea people bound by language, onto the sails of a traditional pinisi ship. It was created sailing throughout Eastern Indonesia, in collaboration with the indigenous seafaring culture currently living there. The people met along the journey allowed their hands to be traced onto the sails as they were brought from island to island. This act was an homage to cave paintings comprised of hand stencils and a deer pig in Sulawesi, re-dated to be among the oldest art in the world. Their hands swam around the compositional elements of animals relevant to the Buginese culture and creation myth, La Galigo, a mammoth piece of literature totaling 6,000 pages. On the backside of the sails, excerpts of La Galigo cover the entirety of the canvas. The colors were determined by a piece of driftwood found on the beach, and given to the ship's crew to pick the palette, accent colors were inspired by the Muslim mosques, abundant jungles, and surrounding turquoise waters.
