Marks of Quotation Installation

This original artwork is inspired by my fascination with letters, words and font that resonate with several previous generations of printmakers that were in my family dating back to Victorian times. I have always been instinctively drawn to the beauty and perfection of particular fonts and am intrigued by how a group of random letters can provoke your mind to instinctively fill in the gaps to try to make the text make sense in some way. The piece is made from an original printing tray that has tiny brass corners between each segment. The wood has been brought back to life by being treated with Danish Oil. Each segment is infilled with individually made ceramic inserts that have been imprinted with a variety of letters and fonts. The imprints were made with a random selection of metal type face, some of which are modern and some date back to Victorian times. The stoneware ceramic segments were then glazed with a blue black slip that picks out the details. It has 2 metal rings on the top of artwork to hang it from. It will require some heavy duty hanging wire or some very strong wall fixings depending on where you wish to hang it. 36.8cm x 82.5cm x 3.4cm
