Èpurer Installation

On the cloister outside and in an exhibition inside the ‘ex convento dei carmelitani’ (current location of the civic museum) in Carini, the artist Vincenzo Zancana has installed Epurer, figurative sculptures that evoke sicilian folktales and references to the mob of Palermo. The installation consists of various tuff pieces and limestones with above printed wax texts with macabre references and words, based on the novel I Beati Paoli by Luigi Natoli. The site specific installation is designed to have a particular relationship with its spatial environment, but also on a conceptual and social level, as a sort of protection but also as if it tended to be influenced. It also creates a high level of intimacy between itself and the viewer as a mere representation of the Sicilian culture and how it allows to include multiple influences and vicissitudes (for ex: Carmelitani), but at the same time how it often expelled new cultures. The artist uses the paraffin wax (white solid form) which is able to absorb everything in contact but also it can remove impurities if it is melted
