About The Artwork

Spaces In-between Welina is a traditional Hawaiian greeting. According to my Kumu Hula (Hula teacher), it means a stone thrown into a calm pool of water and the he ripples of love radiate from the giver, touches the banks and returns to the giver. This is a metaphor for the loving greetings to be sent to the receiver and then returned. This was the inspiration for this video installation. In this installation there are two pieces of plexi-glass, semi opaque, suspended in the room. Because the plexi-glass is semi opaque, you can see the projected video on both sides of the plexi. The video projected onto the two screens is ripples of water generated from a stone thrown into the water. As the video progresses the water ripples change from music and dialogue that is being pulsated through the water from unseen speakers. Only the effects on the water surface are visible. In-between the video is suspended shapes. These organic shapes are 3D printed forms that are covered in encaustic wax. This piece explores the idea of the poetic effects of a loving greeting and the more agitating effects generated from more abrasive sound. It is a reflection on our current lives and the environment we have manifested. The installation represents our interior and exterior realities.

I do art work because I am into planting questions. Finding answers is a messy job and I don't mind getting my hands dirty. My main motivation to create artwork is to find universal languages, searching for common truths that unite rather than separate. I feel that artwork, at its best, mirror society and our interior selves, raise questions, and presents communication and reflection. I try to make my messages human, poetic, inclusive, humorous, accessible and comprehensible to everyone. I am mainly a conceptual artist who uses both traditional and non-traditional media to explore ideas. The various media I work in are video, painting, photography, installations, performance, movement, music, poetry, kinetic stage sets, sculpture, ceramics and film. I tend to work in series. I explore the concept through the series of work till I exhaust the idea. Usually I move to the next concept and at times return to former concepts with newfound ideas. My artwork is in constant change. I feel to live a fully creative life we must constantly critically examine our work. We must attempt to discern where we have become stagnant and where we might explore new beginnings. There can be no new growth if we do not stay open and risk vulnerability. The predictability in any art form can be debilitating.
