About The Artwork

THE BLOOD QUEEN, 2013 is a conceptual installation based on the human heart which has come out of a personal experience of being with my mum when she passed in 2011. She stands on stage with Baroque presence of contrasting materials in many depths of red. She is made up of satins, silks, lace, Royal Albert tea cups holding mother's ashes, jacquard, metal jewelry, tulle and silkscreened anatomical drawings on organza. With an animatronic hand that opens and closes she beckons you to visit her in the round. She re-presents a vascular world of veins, cells, and bodily organs that ooze, squeeze, descend and float into a comforting sea of heart felt warmth. Sam TK sees our heart's relentless pump of vitality as a metaphorical center that pumps between desire and relief when answering our heart's obsessions. Her perspective of the heart is more than a mechanical device that uses suction and pressure but is a kind of brain that has an awareness beyond the body, a mystery beyond reasonable understanding. Desiring and letting go is a dance we all share just like being breathed is a gift we are given in our lifetime. Her mother's passing was a process of surrender to something much larger, to that of Nature.
