About The Artwork

In my exhibition “The (in)visible Legacy: becomings of hypomnema” at the Historical Museum Cabildo (Montevideo, 2015-2016), my work was centered on a reflection about the historical representation of the feminine and specifically, on how these representations are treated (or ignored) by the museological discipline. In this project it was very important to combine the work with the community private archives. In the private sphere where most of the time the small treasures are kept, is because its values are emotional and sensible. Hundreds of pieces arrived and we had to select. The need for sharing was huge. Among them there were love letters from a century ago, grandma cooking recipes, fabric notebooks, boxes of lost rings, songs, old textiles and photos. All these pieces came with stories of traditions, passions and affections but also of betrayal, abuse and abandonment, making visible relegated legacies that were shared. The exhibition brought forward cross community and institutional coexistence. From there we generated new dialogues and reflections about the official historiography and its exclusions. The circulation, the void and the archive interrogating the identity notion from the artistic practice and its relation with the museum and through the chanel of the museum finally recipient.

I view my practice as an ongoing process where I include a vast inventory of objects, images, stories and other inventions I revisit time and time again. I use layering, blurry images and a certain formal sensuousness to create an immersive experience offering access from different interaction levels for every individual. My artwork often includes pieces I collect from flea markets and family and community archives. Thus, individual and collective searches are an essential part of the process. I propose a strategy of hybridisation and disruption that invites questions about the limitations we face in everyday life. My work therefore explores the ways in which we are affected and transformed by external factors and impulses, and the interrelation between a personal conscience and the collective perception.
