Toy Soldier #3 Installation

This is one of a series of paintings using a set of toy soldiers as inspiration. I bought 12 of these toys on-line without knowing exactly what they were. When I could actually hold them in my hands, I realized that they were quite unusual. I'm told by toy experts that they were most likely made in Japan immediately after WWII, 1946 or '47, when Japan's economy was in tatters, and there were many skilled artisans looking for work. They were mass produced, but each was hand finished, making each figure a unique piece of sculpture, barely 3 inches tall, and each was hand painted. They are correctly proportioned, but slightly distorted due to scale and they have been subjected to decades of use and abuse so their noses are rubbed off in part and their paint is chipped, giving each a unique pathos, wistful and just a little comic at the same time. I've painted the series off and on for the last 10 years, I paint other subjects as well, but keep coming back to these military toys. I think the resonate with where we find ourselves today.
