According to a legend, the oldest trace of which dates from the 1st century, in the Achillesides of Stace, the mother of Achilles, the marine nymph Thetis, had plunged Achilles as a child into the river of the Underworld, the Styx, holding him by the heel. He thus became invincible wherever water had come into contact with his skin, that is to say everywhere except the heel which became his weak point.
