About The Artwork

“Aztec nobleman, drinking”. Ancient Mexican codex, orange. Authorities on ancient Mexico Angel Maria Garibay, Alfonso Caso, Paul Westheim, Miguel León-Portilla, Alfredo López Austin, Eduardo Matos and Patrick Johansson have given me a wonderful legacy and insight into the ancient cultures of Mesoamerica. Maarten Jansen, a leading contemporary expert on precolonial codices, thinks that codex interpretation is flawed and sustains: “The result is not perfect but perfectible. The fundamental idea of the comment is to give readers a guide to accomplish their own interpretation.” During 50 years of living and working in Mexico City as a professional photographer I have brought to life some natives and rituals of ancient Mexico and, with them, have found a way to better understand what it means to be human. In the late sixties I photographed Mixtec women for the photobook “Ñundeui, at the foot of the sky”, published in 2008, and have concluded my illustrated journey through 50 years of Day of the Dead rituals titled “To die is to live in Mexico”. Since 2021 I celebrate the religious worldview and aesthetic of the ancient authors of codices, the Tlacuilos, by enhancing digitally some of their most fascinating and significant creations. The result is a personal vision based on known facts and data enhanced by my intuition and imagination. I strive to uncover the magic and mystery of ancient pictograms. The experts read pictograms as data without taking into account their aesthetic and emotional nature. They make great efforts to rationally explain the ancient worldview but fail to see that it cannot be understood without its magic and mystery. Data are fundamental. So is the aesthetic and emotional nature of pictograms. Hopefully my work will inspire awe and admiration for an utterly different culture, whose beauty fascinates with its exoticism and mystery. Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

As an industrial photographer from Cologne, Germany, based since 1967 in Mexico City, I used my craft for decades to document scenes and subjects in sharp, detailed and well lit images. Back in the seventies, when simulating views of other planets, I was looking for a different perception of reality and found it with infrared color film. Today I enjoy a creative freedom similar to that of a painter. With the right combination of photograph and digital manipulation I can create images that are a tribute to imagination and beauty. Starting in 2019 I present on Saatchiart 15 collections as a synopsis of my photography, some digitally remastered and others digitally modified, for sale as archival inkjet prints in different sizes.
