The political and symbolic resonance of flags and banners was what attracted me initially and got my curiosity inflamed. I was trying to understand what turns a piece of fabric into such a powerful symbol that can make people kill or die for it. A flag or a banner can be used to represent a nation, a religion, a sports team, to celebrate a victory or the conquest of a territory, but also to symbolize and defend a cause. They carry multiple meanings at the same time even for people within the same nation. In some cases a flag can be a divisive symbol or, as is the case in Belgium which is quite unique, unifying. The time, the space and the context can completely change the symbolism of that very same flag. I make compositions presenting universal values or presenting violation of human rights that are unacceptable in civilized societies.

To be an artist means to me first of all to exist in a life full of substance and sense. Second, to perform the continuous effort to develop new visions, forms, and ways of aesthetic expression. My artistic nature found its expression through the visual arts. I studied at The Athens University of Fine Arts where a little later I came back to teach. I have chosen mosaic as a medium because it was unexplored in the fields of contemporary arts, I never forced the evolution of my personal style which was developed through research, work and experimentation. I see mosaic as a mixture of painting and sculpture and I am interested in aesthetically constructing forms and volumes, avoiding the trap of simply exploiting the charm of bright and colourful smalti, natural and semi-precious stones. Gradually I started to use other materials like found objects, Japanese paper tissues, crystals etc. thus creating a kind of mixed media. Lately I started to work with collages which I developed through research, experimentation and work, creating forms based on painterly principles, resulting in homogeneous compositions and not fragmentary images placed next to each other. What is common in both mosaic and collage is that I have to deconstruct materials, papers, stones etc and re-construct them as something new. I have had a career that would be considered international by exhibiting in many countries around the world and it was the same with my works which could be found in private collections and historical monuments in numerous countries.
