“Black death and fertility” Codex Fejervary Mayer, sheet 37 Mictecacíhuatl and Mictlantecuhtli, the lady and lord of the underworld, decide on a dead man in the jaws of Tlaltecuhtli, the devourer of corpses and monster of the Earth. What does it all mean? The Mexican archeologist Eduardo Matos defined it many years ago:” Through death you get to life and life leads back to death. It is the vital cycle that takes place day by day, year after year.” Digitally enhanced on royal blue background by MM in February 2022. My recent modifications of this pictogram are too colorful to depict the gods of the underworld. When searching for a more conceptual representation I inverted the image to negative. Now the skulls are black. I applied subdued greys and blues to the figures, but maintained the striking red of the snake and blood on the teeth of the gods and the fangs of Tlaltecuhtli. Now the digital version emphasizes the fantastic imagination of the Tlacuilo and the awesome power of the ancient image. The 50 cm print comes in a limited edition of 9.
