About The Artwork

I am using painting practice to problematise the practice of self-representation witnessed in contemporary screen-based image culture. Using painting as a representational tool I probe the representation of the self witnessed in contemporary practices of image making and the rituals involved in maintaining socially endorsed beauty standards, idealised, and perfected bodies. Exploring how visual culture reinforces and commodifies women’s bodies, the paintings offer an interrogation of a cultural system that places exchange value on various presentations of self and an intervention on the commodification of women’s bodies in mass and social media. Through painting the body-in-process- a body that rejects a whole, self-restricted, and biological definition, rearticulating it instead as a socio-cultural artifact- I critique, the automatic, cyclical, and repetitive processes involved in the construction the of the self seen in contemporary digital culture, that leads to the perpetuation of perfected bodies
