In 2012 I read about a slave mass grave that was supposedly located in the Camps Bay beach area, one of the most prominent beaches in South Africa. The idea that few knew of this historic possibility, whilst people from all over were obliviously sun-tanning and enjoying cocktails on the clean white sand, whilst beneath a layer of dark history might loom, intrigued and inspired me to create this work. Only in 2015, when the discovery of the São José slave ship artefacts was announced, did I realise that the topic and location which I was so involved in had a much broader and global interest and fascination. The general aim of this artwork was for me to dive into this specific world and time, to explore these various aspects of a topic that I find many people (even I) don’t understand or know enough about. Now that this work is complete, I believe the artwork allows for dialogue to emerge. Due to the various layers and aspects, this work has to offer, there are multiple and diverse entry points into a conversation that can lead to so much more... Artworks Appropriated: The Slave Ship, originally titled Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and Dying—Typhon coming on, is a painting by the British artist J.M.W. Turner, first exhibited in 1840. Measuring 35 3/4 x 48 1/4 in. in oil on canvas, it is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In this classic example of a Romantic maritime painting, Turner depicts a ship, visible in the background, sailing through a tumultuous sea of churning water and leaving scattered human forms floating in its wake. The Pit, is a photograph by Gregor Röhrig taken in 2009. The Pit is a photograph of statues located in Stone Town, which were built in memory of the estimated one million slaves which were bought and sold in Zanzibar during the 1800s. Beneath the Beach, is a photograph by Gregor Röhrig taken in 2012 from the top of the Red Bus. Camps Bay is a popular tourist attraction and this photograph taken from the top of the Red Bus emulates the viewing point of the ‘ignorant tourist’. But are the tourists as ignorant as the people living in this location? Who knows of, or appreciates the dark history this picturesque location has to offer...

Gregor is a photographer and visual artist from South Africa. He creates provoking images that are thematically focussed and set to interrogate perceptions and self-reflection on culture, landscapes, identity, emotions and mythology. Through his visual work, Gregor captures the complex strength and fragility of the human condition. He carefully visualises and merges layers of realities with imaginations, while exploring what it means to be, think, feel, and dream in the urban world. Whilst his photographs are striking in composition and rich in story-telling, his visual art is in constant creative evolution where he uses exquisite photo-manipulation to create his imaginal works. Gregor has over the past decade evolved with his art, working inventively with various mediums, such as aluminium and silk, and other avant-garde photographic concepts. He has exhibited internationally with group exhibitions raining from Rotterdam to Milan, and has held various successful solo exhibitions in South Africa.
