I am both a poet and a painter. I am influenced by colorists and modernists like Matisse and Bonnard and later painters such as Wayne Thiebaud. I am very interested in light and the relationship between light and color. I love the geometry of light in Hopper's paintings and the detail of separate colors in Thiebaud's paintings of pies, cakes and landscapes which suggest the joys of light. I like painting to be on a window sill between figurative and abstract expression. I am a humanist, and hope for the world to be better--as Matisse said, art should be a comfort. So I, too, like the image of Matisse's "armchair"--a rest for the person who needs comfort, relaxation and inspiration. I think all the arts are related. Also, we need to bring the arts back to education. "Bing Cherries in a Blue Bowl" is a painting influenced by Thiebaud and Matisse. The medium I use is a stylus and a program called "Procreate" on the Ipad. David Hockney's beautiful ipad paintings and his discovery of all the layers of color possible through a digital mixing rather than, say, watercolors, are also reasons for my finding my way to this medium. So my canvas and my palette, both, are the ipad--and my brush is the Apple stylus.
